Toilet Training - 2

We were out in KL and stayed in hotel for 3 nights. Adam's toilet training is getting better. He didn't need kid toilet seat there. He did it naturally, not much waiting. We told him, if he can't do, he can just walk and try again. No crying. Every time he does it, he will say that he is going to send to somebody's house. Granny's house (J's mom) or Nyayi's house (my mom).
After visited his cousin when we were in KL, then today he said he wanted to send to his cousin's house. Funny boy.

The toilet training

I am not a mother who put my son on potty since he was baby. Never, and I wasn't really put so much effort on potty training Adam. As much as I hate poo I wouldn't want to deal with nappy changing, or potty training. :-) Bad mother. Also, I have a stubborn son!

But, at one point I knew I have to do it. Not just J, I have to get involve in this messy and dirty work. I bought 2 potties, the best kind according to the internet. Which mean the expensive kind, I thought he will love it. No! Hell No! He didn't like potty. He tried sat on there for a while and got bored. We gave up. We told ourselves if he wanted to do it, he will do it by himself.

No it didn't work for stubborn Adam just like that. Not that easy. But now he did it. How?

The pressure is towards us, when we went to his future school. The principal said toilet-training is one of the requirement. Oops! Are they going to reject him if he doesn't?

The wee part wasn't difficult. J did the work, one day he just put him on the toilet and tickled him until he wee-ed. Yes, TICKLE him! It was funny, but we made it. Adam saw the color change in the bowl. And since then he loves weeing in the toilet. Flush, wash hand and dry. He got sticker every time he did it. That encourage him to do again and again.

When come to poo part, he didn't do it as he his wee. He requested nappy... Even if I declined, he was so smart to go into the room to find the pull up and wore himself. I almost gave up. Again we told ourselves, it will eventually come as it is. But, no! Same thoughts. Adam is one stubborn little boy. I wonder where did he get this from :-)

Bribing didn't work for him. Cars, train, none work.

Until last weekend. I told myself today is the day. I was cruel, evil, pushy mother. :D The punishment way. I know this is bad and I read from one forum when at the point the child knew how to manipulate us with nappy or some other kind then you got to be cruel to be good.
For 3 hours I sat with my son in the toilet. I told him. No toys! No books! Of course he cried and he requested nappy. In every 5 minutes I asked him to walk. He then came back to me said he wanted nappy. I carried him to the toilet. For I don't know how many times I did it. Yes, in that 3 hours. I hold his hand that I am with him to help him. J came down 3 hours after putting Sophie to her nap. Then, 3 of us in the toilet. He cried and told us he was scared. Sitting down and walking... seems forever. Finally he did it in the toilet. We knew that we just need to make this first poo.

Same day, he made his second poo. Of course in between, there are some accident with his wee and poo. But he made it. Like today, he did by himself, no help. He just sat down and when he heard the splash he knew he is done :-) Just that, I have to witness his poo. He called me to see that he had done poo.

I don't know what is the best way or right way to do toilet-training. Different kid has different way of doing it. But I know a parents we just have to make him do it :-)

Pink

You know when you have a daughter you tend to buy a lot of pink stuffs. Not only that, one of big reason is to tell Adam that anything pink is belong to Soph. Pink is a big NO for him(guy in my house)

She wouldn't show any interest with the wrapped presents. When we opened it and show to her that it is pink. She will just grab it and say WOW.

So funny when seeing this 2 characters of our children.

Chair that you grow with it.

When Sophie was born we decided to get another high chair for Adam, that she can use Adam's Chicco Polly. So we get him this Stokke Tripp Trapp.

I am seriously sucker when come to baby gadget. I love this chair because it made from wood, and it is not so much high chair like. Even myself can use it. We thought when they can sit on normal chair, we are going to move this chair for their studies. It is quite pricy but we know this kind of stuff that you will pass generation to generation. And he can even use it when he is old. The chair that can be used from baby to old.

That we love it so much, we got the same kind but pink color for Sophie. Just need to get baby accessories for it.

In Penang you can get it from Mothercare. Although, they are going to stop being a distributor, can still get in other baby shop like Mamours in KL.

Stocking is up!

About time to bed. My boy has put up stocking under the Christmas tree in his room.

Just like Hari Raya, kids are more excited about celebrating it than the adult. I am not making any turkey as we will leave to KL soon.

I can't wait to see how excited he will be tomorrow. He deserved it, because he has done 2 big things that we were waiting him to do by himself. Toilet training, and sleeping by himself in his own room. I will blog more about it sooner.

J is taking whole week off and we are going to do more shoppings :-) It is year end sale everywhere.

The ship or sh*t

Just because of our kids, we came back here again. First time we came we didn't like it, and second time we came still don't like it.

Adam loves the whole ship tough and he ate 2 and half packets of anchor butter.

Minced Pie

Ok! We are still having 2 more days to christmas. We still have ginger bread to make with Adam. Let's leave it tomorrow.

Today, I made minced pie. I still think this is the best minced pie I have ever had. (MODEST)
Not my original recipe, it is from BBC good food. Here is the recipe.

We have been making this every year since we moved in.

I should try make the minced meat from scratch. May be next time.

This is the jarred minced meat which I found doesn't contain alcohol if you don't drink.

Wonder how long these pies will last :-)

Food allergen

20111207_121910_Japan by AziBam
20111207_121910_Japan, a photo by AziBam on Flickr.

My grocery time is longer than ever nowadays. When buying foods I have to really read the ingredient to make sure if it is contains any milk or not.

Thing is getting worse, not only milk. You thought to rely on soy milk. Same reaction she is having. As long as this dairy product and soy isn't main ingredient is still ok. She will still show some red reaction on her face. Like eating popcorn, butter is in it but not much reaction as when she had cheese crackers. I had to rush to pharmacy and thanks to google translator to translate anti-histamine to Japanese. I am not a med student so I have never learned.

It is going to be a lot of miss for her, like when her school is going to have ice-cream day, birthday cake (creamy cake) etc. Poor Sophie. Also, no mac & cheese for her (Adam's favorite).

How serious is this food allergen can be? One can get anaphylaxis shock if eating something that they are allergic to. And when this happen, it can cause swollen in their breathing system and may have difficulty to breath. That is when it gets so serious.

We plan to go run test this week to see what other allergen she might be having.

Card Making

My son is on his way to post the Christmas card to friends and relatives. We hope it will arrive on time. I totally forgot that we hadn't done any card yet.

With Adam help I made super simple card. He helped to glue, stamp and put sticker on.

At the same time also he wanted to play with his trains.
The most important thing is the fun that we had in making cards from scratch :-)

You can easily get the supply in local book store Popular or MPH, and for some card making fanatic like me, we usually get from specialize craft supply shop. In Penang we can get in Smidapaper. I bought online a lot, and this is my favorite online shop; Scrap and Crop.

If you down in KL, 1Utama has a few craft shop, they had renovation when I was down there in September. So I don't know how many left. And even if you are in The Curve, you can swing by into Papier.

Home where is the heart belong

During my recent trip to Japan I met my friend who I haven't seen since 1997. Even when I was in Japan I din't meet him at all. I think he is the one in my batch who choose to stay in Japan after graduated. And at the same time also I met another friend who is furthering her PHD studies.

It was very short meeting with them, so there is nothing I can't say much or judge from the short meeting how is other people life. I have been reading this blog just to know how other Malay's perspective who chose to live in other country for good. I kind of agree what he wrote in this blog but some of the things just you have to experience it then you will know and you can say.

A few Malays who live in other country always want to know about how is Malay in Malaysia are doing, well or not. :-)
"Tak melayu kalau tak jaga tepi kain orang :-D"

I wonder if white in Malaysia wants to know the same thing in UK or US? Or Chinese in Malaysia who wants to know about their people in their own country. Other than watching BBC or CNN. I definitely need to ask my husband if he is not busy... (He has been so busy since we back from Tokyo, too many backlog ;-))

Anyway, everyone has their own choice where they want to stay and how they want to continue their life. My friend whom I knew since I was 13, we went to study abroad together, joined the same company at the same day. He decided to move to Australia sooner. The Hijrah for good.

Where is my home? I don't think Johor is a place for me that I can call home, I called it my parents house. Even in KL where my sister and my brother stay isn't somewhere I want to call home. England, definitely not my home. Even my husband say the same thing.

Penang is our home...

Ergo baby carrier

We bought this since ever Adam time, but we didn't really use much with Adam. May be because I worked and most of the time if we were out we put him in the stroller.

When we had Sophie, we had been trying to use a lot of carrier. And really need carrier when you have 2 little children and close age. Baby bjorn was the best from newborn until she was one year old. We got the Baby Bjorn Synergy, which is suitable for Malaysia tropical weather.

She is getting heavier now. And Baby Bjorn just doesn't do well for her and me. So during recent trip we thought why not just use Ergo Baby.

We bought it Australia. In penang you can get it from this shop in Bullfrog and Butterfly in Tanjung Bungah.

I love it, and so did she at this winter season. It kept each other warm. And amazingly it is everywhere in Japan. With fancy design. Most of parents with little kids have it. We can either wear it in the front or at the back. I haven't tried with Sophie yet at the back, tried with Adam.

This company just recently bought Orbit company the most expensive stroller that I knew. (well may be classic silvercross)

Other thing what I love about it, the weight will be felt around the waist instead of shoulder. I am looking for other cool design of they do in Malaysia.

Light up

Adam and I are having flu at the moment, since yesterday. We both no appetite. Although, beransur pulih.

Not the good time to fall sick. We are leaving for Tokyo for long planned vacation.

Yesterday, the christmas tree near home finally is lighting up. I like see Christmas tree and feel very Christmas in Malaysia since I was born.

Got people sang Christmas carol and some lady distributed a paper for the lyric, hehehe... I wasn't interested in that and sorry I am not christian :-)

Our home

20111119_111150_Home by AziBam
20111119_111150_Home, a photo by AziBam on Flickr.

I always remind myself to be thankful for what we are having. This place is just 1-2 minutes walk from our home. It is not as big as Sydney harbor, or as big as Singapore Esplanade, but it is a nice refreshing view from our daily works and stress. We don't own any of the unit here or even the shop, or any boat. KInd of regret for not buying when the price was low.

This is home to our children, this is what Adam and Sophie are going to grow up with. Marina, boats and sea...
We both didn't grow up in this kind of places, so every time we come here we feel very very grateful. And we always say to each other..."Look babe, this is where we live"

There are more boxes to do, either to put on magnet, or can hang on Christmas tree as decoration.

Why child car seat....

Last week, I had a garage sale event with a few other mommies. They were expat's wife who live in Malaysia and some of them about to leave this country.

When mingle with them, I always get those questions about local, and one of them was usage of car seat. Why aren't many parents using car seat while driving with their kids.

A lot of reasons. This country isn't a developed country where people see car seat isn't a must have item when having baby. No enforcement is one of them, we only recently enforce about usage of seat belt for the rear seat passenger, it is still long way to enforce the car seat for kids.

Lack of education, even tough they use the car seat, there are still some people who are using it incorrect way, for example, putting the kids on the front passenger seat with the air bag is active, or even put the baby in the seat but the seat belt is loose. Which I always have to remind myself to always check my kid's strap. If one can put the kids in the car seat as long as possible that is the best way of doing it. There are car seat that is design for the kids up to 37kg, which mean for the average kid is up to 7 years old. I even have many friends who works in my ex-company don't think that car seat is important.

Another reason, is of course the price. It is too expensive. I just found out today that the import duty for the car seat is 30% and the sales tax is 10%. All this while we just bought in Malaysia, until we want to get one of this car seat that not in stock everywhere in Malaysia at the moment.
I once sent a message to my friend who is working in Perodua if they can design a good quality child car seat at reasonable price. Which I thought it is better for this company to be innovative and becoming more "people" company.

May be it is a time for me to write a letter to custom department and woman & kids minister to reduce this duty tax. After all it is our kid's safety. How shall I help to educate parents about this matter?

I got some parents who made a comment when they were kids, they didn't use car seat, but still fine for them. It was the time when there were not many cars on the road.

Just think of this, child car seat is built to reduce the injury impact when there is accident occurred. If we can afford to eat at a nice place, nice holiday or even mice clothes, why not nice child car seat. And we can always re-sale the car seat when the kids are growing. Think!

Being Sincere

One afternoon, at car park. There was a VW Golf GTI parked next to our car.

Daddy, "Adam, is this car nice?"
Adam, "Yeah, Nice!"
Adam, "... But may be cannot fit you..."
Daddy, "&*(&%$$*()^%%"

Smart *ss

One morning during breakfast, I took some fruit loops from Adam bowl.

Adam, "Mommy, No! Don't take"
Mommy, "Mommy paid for this so I can take" (Not a good role model mother eh?)
Adam, "No, Adam pay this"
Mommy, "Where did you the get money from?"
Adam, "From uncle"
Mommy, "Which Uncle?"
Adam, "Uncle James"
Daddy, "...."

Kid's education

Last week we both went to Adam future school. It wasn't our first time there, so we are quite familiar with the place. There are many parents, locals and foreigners. I would say 25% are foreigners. We have registered, but of course there will be assessment that we need to go through, just like if our kids are independence, no language problem etc.
We still have to work on Adam potty properly. Number 1 is fine, number 2 still a bit challenge for us. "Interesting" part is the school fees increased 12 % than last year, but seems it won't happens every year. Inflation rate in Malaysia is getting high and high... :-)
With a lot of things are going on, I feel a bit nervous about my son, will he be doing great at school? Will he be naughty? Or "loyar buruk"?
Well I guess all parents will have the same worries as we do when their kids start schooling.

Aidil Adha 2011

We didn't balik kampung, even my sis and brother who are in KL also didn't go home. Too short holiday.

Things I will try not to forget. No matter where I am rendang, ketupat and lodeh are must have dish during this muslim holy celebration :-)

I am so lucky my husband can cook this too.
This time, I prepared the ingredients, and J did the seasoning job.

Adam made pancake

This is last Saturday morning. He loves to help me in the kitchen, just a simple thing, like washing vegetable he likes to do.

I let him do the frying stuff only during pancake or any oven stuff, boiling or other cooking still not safe to do yet.

Cool apron which I found in MPH come together with kids cook book for RM39.90. Not bad eh?

My son is so "alim"

Today during dinner I wore a camisole. Which I seldom do even at home. (Today, is so much cleaning to do, that was the best outfit to wear)

So my son asked me,
"You go to shopping like this?"
"You want to show your tummy?"

J giggled when he heard that and asked Adam, "Can mommy where like that to shopping?"

His answer was, big "NO!!!"

Pet or not to have Pet

I have been busy this week, with a lot of new things came up at the same time. One of them, is our cats... We took 2 cats from SPCA, and love them so much. Adam can't just leave them alone. We named them Eve and Lauren (WOWO, that is what my son called)... They both are sisters...

But, it wasn't like what we expected. It wasn't easy. One of the cat Eve, which gets along with Adam very well couldn't go to litter tray. She just poo-ed everywhere. When I mean everywhere not like somewhere she hid it. Almost ever corner of the house, in the kitchen, on carpet, and she just didn't want to do in the litter tray.

We gave a try with a lot of ways, changing the sand to paper in their litter tray. Just she still poo-ed just outside the litter tray. Every day, 2~3 times a day, J and I had to clean the toilet. Sanitize the toilet. Just because poo were everywhere.

This morning, was really our last decision. It was too much when she poo-ed and one of them tried to be Picasso smearing the poo everywhere in the toilet. Seriously, it was an art :-P

We both felt horrible, felt we have done something really cruel. We had to let Eve go back to the SPCA. Ladies in SPCA thought she might want to be the only cat, that's why she behave like that.

When we arrived home, we felt relieve. We cleaned and sanitized the whole house, and gave bath to Lauren. Feel clean....

KK with kids

I am not very good in writing any travel log, (in fact I think myself is suck in writing :-P).
There is a thing that I would like to share why I like about KK, that made us want to come back again and again. This is my second time here, and the last one was in November 2006. (God! That was 5 years ago)

That this time we went with our kids, we really look at all those kids friendly places. We stayed at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, a bit pricy, but if book earlier we will always get very good deal! And even so, there are a lot of other hotels in KK that offer very reasonable price.

20111028_110136_KK
I love the sand in South East Asia Sea. Unlike Penang the sand is very soft, white and smooth. I wish I have this piece of land back in Penang. With kids this time we didn't do any tour to Sepilok, or Tuaran or other area. We just stayed in KK with our kids.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru is definitely kids friendly hotel with big water play area, large swimming pool and a few area for kids to spash, and even Sophie can walk around everywhere safely. Another high light is the playroom, really large playroom for kids to play from baby like Sophie to bigger kids. And they even have a lot of activities managed by the hotel. The hotel was quite busy when we visited. A lot of people came with their kids.

I think there are a lot of things to do in KK, instead of Langkawi. Even for couple to honeymoon or with family and kids. We managed to see orang utan, watched the North Borneo Railway with British style steamed engine came back from their 2 times trip in a week. It will take us 4 hours to do the trip, so we decided to do it next time when Sophie is a bit bigger.

Some photos that we took during our trip.

He did it!

J and I had been struggle with Adam's stubbornness to do potty training. Yes, we were seriously stressed with him who didn't want to go to potty. He asked us for nappy when he wanted wee wee. Although, his school teacher told us not to be worried.
But recently, he had been doing good in wee wee, I mean this one week. No potty, straight to toilet, he can wee wee.

Finally! This is what I keep saying to J. When he wants to do it, he will do it. Like today, he said he wanted to poo, so he sat on the toilet. Although, nothing came out. Yes finally he wants to sit on toilet.

The secret, he likes to see water's color change in the toilet bowl :D

We joined the party with Adam, and she had a small cake on her own birthday. Just four of us in our local restaurant. Sophie has grown up so quickly. Can't believe that it was a year ago I had to be cut again by Dr Ooi :-)

Last saturday, my son turned 3. We had a small do at home, by inviting neighbors & friends. He had a great day, real great day. A lot of presents...

Before he blew the candle he asked me,
"Mommy, Adam don't have to sing? Other people will sing for me?". He just wanted to confirm.

"Yes Adam, and you only blow the candle after everyone finished singing", I replied...

I love you Adam! And always be a good boy!

Balance first, then pedal.

with runna bike by AziBam
with runna bike, a photo by AziBam on Flickr.

OK, I am not trying to change the way how one should learn riding bicycle, but we are just having this bicycle for Adam thought he might like it. I don't want to say how many rides he has already gotten, we are just like other parents, who are spoiling our kids :-)

Adam definitely loves this bike. My neighbor said he had set a trend in Penang with this cool wooden balance bike. He now can ride with both feet up, and can be very fast, when he goes down the hill. The only thing I am worrying of, is the break, where this bike doesn't have break. And he got to do it like BMX's break style... scary eh!

What have we turned our kid into????

Penang Road Chendul

It has been a while we went to Penang Road Chendul. This time we brought Adam. He doesn't like it :-( But will try again. It could be so many people and feels uncomfortable with a lot of strangers. The chendul uncle always remembers J, whenever we go there :-) Not many mat salleh go there as regular customer I guess.

October is busy month

Sophie can walk now, so life is getting challenging. We think she started walking faster than Adam at 10 months and half.
Anyway, J is still traveling, this time to Chengdu, and following week to Mecca again. At least he is around in the weekend. Then relax for a while until mid Nov.
I have started preparing for our kid's birthday. Adam will be three end of this month so will do a bit bigger than last year. 2 parties for him. Lucky boy!!!!

Cats

Last Friday we went to SPCA again with Adam. We will not get the cats too soon, perhaps in next month, as we are traveling on end of this month. There are 2 lovely cats that we like. Both are female. When we asked Adam what do you want to call your cats, he kept saying KITTEN. Previous visit he wanted to name his cats PINK and RAIN.

Menu Planner

Today my cooking gas finished while I was cooking for my daughter, I think after 6months of using it finally it is finished. And this is the shortest time I had to renew the cooking gas. I guess I cook a lot this year after I quit work.

Anyway, I like to read housewife tips on internet. And there is one, I found on internet about this family who planned their 1 week meal so they won't spend on grocery that they will throw away. I thought of giving a try on how to use it. As I need to clear my freezer :) And hopefully I am discipline enough to continue doing it. :-)

Train

Looks like boy will have one period of obsession with trains. I ask most people with boy, they made the same comment. Boys love train and vehicle. I wonder if Sophie is going to have same interest as her brother.

With Chuggington train. He started to like Thomas and Friends now as well, but we are not going to increase his collection. Way too many.

Brother visit

J's eldest brother came to visit us from last Saturday till today. He had work to do with Singapore Formula 1 racing, so he dropped by to visit us. I got to pick him at airport since J will only back after 4 hours later. Before he arrived I had sessions with my boy by showing him photo of his uncle, who looks similar to J.

As we arrived airport and saw J'bro, Adam ran towards him and shouted DADDY!!! But about a meter nearing him, he was stunt and cried. It wasn't daddy :-)
Anyway, they get along very well.

So what do you think? Similar? I can tell the different. And poor little Adam is going to look like them when he is big... :-D
